Default mode network

The default mode network refers to the brain's resting state. It kicks in when we have no specific task to focus on. Stimulus-independent thinking begins, and the mind wanders without us being aware of it.

We plan and look back, situating ourselves in social contexts. The work shows brain scans of people with and without post-traumatic stress disorder who are immersed in this everyday thinking. In people without traumatic stress disorder, various areas of the brain are supplied with blood in this state, and this systemic interaction constructs the impression of a self, an identity. In people with traumatic stress disorder, only a small area is weakly supplied with blood in this resting state. Translated into experience, this means that this person has great difficulty in assuring their own existence.

The two brain scans are covered with an embroidery pattern and printed on lace. Each symbol represents a color. The hieroglyphs and fine fabric that cover and interweave the scans are an indication that we are all made of the same basic colors and interwoven with the same fine fabric. The neuroplasticity of the brain and our biographical experiences give rise to formations and structures through which we view the world. Who are we? The neural formation of the moment or a fine, floating network of basic colors that permeates things?

In a performance, people sit in a circle and embroider the respective prints according to the colors depicted. During the joint embroidery work, the rhythmic, monotonous movements, the brains of those present repeatedly fall into different states, swing into relaxation, and embroider a possible image.
