default mode network
The 'default mode network' refers to the brain's resting state. It kicks in when we have no specific task to focus on.
Stimulus-independent thinking begins, and the mind wanders without us being aware of it. We plan and look back, placing ourselves in social contexts.
The self believes it can reassure itself by losing itself in memories and making assumptions about the future. We lose touch with the moment.
